Demand for AICC hands-on support is exceptionally high. During 2026/27, support will be delivered through a cohort-based approach, with defined application windows and a limited number of places available within each cohort.
This allows us to review businesses consistently, understand their needs and readiness, and ensure AICC's specialist expertise is directed where it can have the greatest impact.
At defined points throughout the year, SMEs will be invited to apply for AICC hands-on support by completing a Pre-Engagement Assessment.
This self-service assessment will ask for information about your organisation, your current use and understanding of AI, your business objectives, challenges and overall readiness to engage with AI support.
It also helps AICC confirm whether your organisation meets the relevant eligibility criteria and identify the most appropriate next step.
Where hands-on SME support is not the right fit, we may signpost your organisation to other AICC support, such as skills and training opportunities, research and development pathways or other relevant programmes.
Businesses that progress beyond the initial Pre-Engagement Assessment will be invited to complete an Innovation Assessment in conjunction with the AICC team.

This assessment helps the AICC team determine the most appropriate form of hands-on support for your organisation.
Following the Innovation Assessment, the AICC team will review your organisation alongside other businesses being considered for the cohort.
Successful applicants will be matched to the form and level of support that best reflects their needs and readiness. This may include an Explorer or Transformer engagement.
As places within each cohort are limited, completing the assessment process does not guarantee an engagement. Decisions will also take into account available capacity and the overall balance of businesses within the cohort.
Where a business is not selected for hands-on support, we may recommend other AICC pathways or encourage the organisation to apply again during a future cohort window.
Successful businesses will agree an engagement plan with the AICC team and work directly with our specialists on the identified activity.
